Research Consortium on Ageing in SADC – Southern African Think Tank for Ageing Research

WHO WE ARE

Southern African Think Tank for Ageing Research is a Research Consortium on Ageing in Southern African Development Community (SADC). It is a group of ageing researchers from different disciplines such as Social Work,  Sociology, Demography, Social Policy, and Nursing, University Lecturers of different disciplines (such as mentioned above), Senior Government officials in charge of welfare of older persons, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working with older persons, and the media, who are interested in undertaking ageing research in SADC, other parts of Africa  and different continents across the world  in order to influence policy and  practice aimed at improving well-being of older persons in SADC. This is because SADC is under-represented in Africa and all the regions across the world with regards to ageing research. Older persons in SADC are also among the poorest in Africa and the whole world. This is because they are few institutions in SADC that are championing well-being of older persons (WHO, 2015; HelpAge International, 2015 & 2018; Kabelenga, 2018; United Nations, 2022).The research consortium is formally registered in Zambia (Southern Africa) as not for profit think tank  for ageing research with its operations in all countries across Southern Africa and other parts of Africa such as Central, East, West and North Africa. It draws consortium members from various countries across SADC region, other parts of Africa, Europe, USA and other continents across the world with the plan to strengthen ageing research aimed at influencing policy and practice in all countries in Southern Africa and other parts of Africa.  The physical office for the consortium is located in Zambia. However, its staff are dotted across Africa. As a result some of its operations are physical and others are virtual.
